Acrylic with Silver Leaf and Screen Print on Canvas, 47 5/8 x 35 3/4 x 1 1/8 in. (121 x 91 x 3 cm)
David Bromley (1960 – ) is among Australia’s most popular artists. His work is imbued with a sense of
whimsy and nostalgia, cut by pop art influence from Andy Warhol. He is largely self-taught and best
known for two subjects: the Boy’s Own series which derives from 1950s children’s books and his
portraits of female nudes, of which ‘Belinda in Silver’ is an example.
Large, beguiling and graphic, ‘Belinda in Silver’ is quintessential Bromley. It fuses the aesthetic tradition
of the female nude with a fashion sensibility. Bromley’s women could be actresses, pop stars or models
– the kind of women you want to know. He evokes how glamorous women, particularly those of a
bygone era, are memorialized as icons. Like Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe, ‘Belinda in Silver’ is at once
seductive and distant, slashed with white and orange paint yet commanding our attention.

Don Eddy, Cardinal Virtues Panel (Faith), 1995-96
Oil on Panel, 63 x 18 in. (160 x 45.7 cm)
Don Eddy's image of three entwined poppies placed in the ruins of a house of Faith arises from his conceit that faith flowers in the ruins of current expectations, and it grows out of that which we find most dependable. The arches are suggestive of windows into the soul. The poppy is, itself, a symbol of consolation, and the three flowers represent the triad of virtues.

(John Malloy) FLuX, Creation, 2022
Oil on Canvas, 48 x 32 in. (121.9 x 81.3 cm)
The first piece in a series titled, ‘Lightning in a Bottle’, focusing on the artist’s personal history dating back to the 1800s. FLuX combines classical realism in oils with avant garde graphic imagery to explore and the beauty and ugliness created back then that would forge our present and future.

Hilary Harkness, Experienced People Needed, 2018
Oil on Linen over Panel, 14 x 22 1/2 in. (35.6 x 57.1 cm)
Note from Hilary Harkness: It's November 8th, 1943 at Peggy Guggenheim's Art of This Century gallery in New York City. Final preparations are being made for the opening of Jackson Pollock's show the following day. Art handlers are forced to wait while Lee Krasner, who has set her career aside to paint for Jackson while he drinks, finishes "The Moon Woman." Meanwhile, Jackson experiences the advent of his drip paintings and Peggy cuts a deal while stitching shut the dress of her daughter Pegeen (age 18). Pegeen is wearing Meret Oppenheim's "Fur Gloves with Wooden Fingers." It was a tense mother-daughter relationship as they competed for men. I included artists and artworks from this time period that weren't included or made famous by Peggy Guggenheim. Behind Jackson stands Jacob Lawrence. Though already famous for his Great Migration series, Lawrence was drafted into the U.S. Coast Guard only a few weeks prior to Jackson's show (Jackson had dodged military service by acting mentally unstable). Bill Traylor, virtually unknown in 1943, pedals his work in the elevator. The anonymous art handlers' sex acts were inspired by early works of Tom of Finland and other vintage porn.Lee Krasner is depicted as black for many reasons, including that my wife Ara modeled for this figure. She is my favorite model. Within the fantastical universe of my paintings, her skin tone remains accurate.

Paulina Olowska, Temida, 2019
Oil on Canvas, 86 5/8 x 55 1/8 x 1 in. (220 x 140 x 2.5 cm)
Temida is an Ancient Greek Titaness. She is the personification of divine law and order, fairness, law, natural law, and custom. Her symbols are the Scales of Justice, tools used to remain balanced and pragmatic. Olowska depicts Temida classically, she stands holding her scale, staring out blindly at the viewer as she flashes a smile. The image was sourced from Jardin des Modes, a French women’s fashion magazine published monthly in France from 1922 - 97.

Jim Shaw, The Hope That Blinds, 2020
Acrylic on Muslin, 49 x 38 x 1 3/4 in. (124.5 x 96.5 x 4.5 cm)
The Hope That Blinds is based on an existing drawing from Shaw’s Man Machine series.
Here, a woman in a virginal white nightgown gazes in the direction of a retro-futuristic
home appliance that since its first outing in a 1950s advertisement has defected its use
value. The title is a reference to Pandora’s Box, and the Ancient Greek conception of ‘hope’
as a danger – the worst evil that encouraged deluded humans to suffer in the hope that
things would improve.
